Private Sub Shipyards Maintenance Work Over Cost & Schedule
During the Senate Armed Committee Navy’s fiscal 2023 budget request hearing Chief of Naval Operations ADM Gilday and Secretary of Navy Carlos Del Toro testified about the lack of capacity in the public shipyards to handle submarine maintenance along with the need for private shipyards to redirect resources to address this challenge.
According to CNO ADM Gilday “we don’t have the capacity in our public shipyards to handle all of that (submarine) maintenance”. He continued to say ““we have two private yards that do that work, and we need their capacity. . . we need them to be all in with us and the nation that they’re supporting in this critical effort. . . We need that capability, it’s a national imperative.”
Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro testified “I’m also deeply concerned about the pace with which both our public shipyards and our private shipyards keep up with the maintenance that’s required by both our submarine fleet as well as our surface fleet as well”. The Secretary pointed out the private shipyards “need to divert the proper resources necessary to do so in terms of capital equipment and also in terms of hiring the necessary workforce at those shipyards in order to increase the pace at which these maintenance cycles are taken.”
We at Bartlett Maritime Corporation agree with CNO ADM Gilday and the Secretary of Navy Carlos Del Toro, additional Naval Shipyard capacity and capability is urgently required NOW. Read further details from the hearing at the links below:
